Darren Gapultos is the Coordinator of the Community Schools Initiatives, Teaching and Learning, at the Sacramento County Office of Education. In this role, he supports districts and county offices in strengthening systems that center student, family, and community voice.
Before joining SCOE, Darren served as a site administrator at the Pittsburg Unified School District, where he led a team that shifted school-wide discipline toward restorative approaches emphasizing reflection, accountability, and inclusion. This collaborative work reduced suspensions, improved attendance, and deepened community trust.
As a Community School Coordinator, Darren established his site's first Coordination of Services Team (COST) and introduced an Early Warning Indicator (EWI) system aligned with Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) practices. Trained in MTSS implementation, he helped build sustainable systems that provided timely, data-informed interventions for students and families. He also strengthened partnerships with local agencies to expand wraparound supports, and this model was later replicated districtwide as more schools adopted the community school framework.
Earlier in his career, Darren worked on multi-stakeholder youth development initiatives in San Francisco's Mission District. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, photography, gardening, and traveling with his wife.
